Introduction to the Model Context Protocol (MCP)

In this article, we explain what the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is, how it differs from our internal AI, and how you can use it for Onepage.

Written by Alina

We are excited to introduce you to the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

MCP is a powerful connection between Onepage and the AI assistants you already use daily outside of our platform. Instead of working exclusively in the integrated editor, you can now use your own external AI assistant to control Onepage, create pages, and manage content for you.

The difference from the internal AI: Under the hood, both systems use the same Onepage AI brain, but MCP currently offers you two crucial advantages:

  • Page-by-page thinking: While the internal AI mostly works its way forward section by section, MCP can grasp, build, or correct an entire page in a single request.

  • Save your Onepage balance: The text tokens are billed directly through your own external AI subscription (e.g., with Claude or Cursor). Your Onepage AI credits therefore remain completely untouched!

📌 Note: An active Onepage AI membership is required in the background to use the MCP feature.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Setup

Depending on which AI assistant you prefer to use, you can find the exact instructions on how to establish the connection to Onepage here:

What Exactly Is MCP anyway?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is like a "USB-C port for AI." In the past, every software manufacturer had to write their own complicated API connection for each individual AI. MCP standardizes this.

It is divided into:

  • MCP Client: The AI program you use (e.g., Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex).

  • MCP Server: The bridge to your software (here: The Onepage MCP server, which understands the AI's commands and translates them into website code).

The Three Pillars of MCP

An MCP server can provide three things to an AI:

  • Prompts (Templates): Pre-made prompt building blocks that the user can use.

  • Resources (Context): Data that the AI can read (e.g., the structure of your existing Onepage page).

  • Tools (Actions): Functions that the AI is allowed to execute (e.g., "Create a new section", "Change the font color").

What Is Possible via MCP?

Your external AI assistant can execute the following actions via MCP:

  • Pages: Create, publish, take offline, and archive

  • Vibe Sections: Fully create and edit individual components

  • Structure: Rename, move, and rearrange sections

  • Websites: Create new websites, manage branding (colors & fonts), and upload media

Important Rules & Best Practices

The quality of the model is crucial:

MCP depends heavily on the AI model used. For the best results, we recommend premium models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet. You should not expect perfect results from smaller models like Haiku or GPT Flash.

Always give clear context:

Always tell the AI exactly which page or section should be worked on (e.g., "Add a contact section to my homepage").

Reload the page to see changes:

The live view is still in development. If you have the Onepage editor open while the AI is working, reload the page to see the changes.

Be careful with major changes:

An extended version history is already planned. Until then, we recommend being cautious with large or imprecise prompts on existing live projects, as content could be overwritten.

What happens if something doesn't look perfect?

If a layout or text doesn't look exactly how you imagined it on the first try, don't worry! This is completely normal when working with AI. You don't have to correct it manually; you can simply tell your AI assistant what to change.

Example: If a headline overlaps on your new page, you can enter the following follow-up prompt into your AI tool:

"Please correct the text 'People behind Nova Living'. The word 'Living' overlaps with the text above."

Example of Claude's response:

"I see the problem: The headline breaks into two lines and overlaps. I have adjusted the font size and line spacing so that it fits perfectly on one line, and added a rule so that it looks great on mobile screens too. The correction is live!"

Note: Remember to reload your Onepage editor tab to see the AI's updates live on your page!
